People in the Japanese city of Obama reacted with joy to his election, as did Indonesian children at the school he attended and Barack Obama’s grandmother in Kenya was clearly delighted.

As we’re recording this right now we are a couple of months out from the November election here in the United States and it’s been fascinating to watch the differences in the ways that the two candidates and the two campaigns have been, or have been not, using social media.
Barack Obama and his campaign seem to be really embracing the ideas of social media, where as John McCain less so. In fact John McCain prides himself on not being a user of a computer, which is kind of interesting to me. However Barack Obama is the complete opposite and a specific thing that Obama did that is so fascinating is that he realises that there’s communities out there of people who are interested in what he is doing and want to follow him using the tools of social media. So in one case he’s got Twitter feed and what he does is he alerts his supporters who subscribe to his Twitter feed about his whereabouts and what he’s doing.
And I found it fascinating that when he announced his candidate for vice president, what he did is he first alerted people on Twitter and other networks as well and his email list and said ‘I’m going to be announcing my candidate for vice president first, to you, my supporters through Twitter and through email and through our site before I even alert the media’. The UK being a nation with strong gun control laws where many gleefully point across the pond to the USA. Berating the USA for too many guns and the resulting violence from such arms. It seems the people in the United Kingdom are rather accomplish at committing violent crimes with a blade rather than a bullet.
The UKs population of around 60 million would put their violent crime rate at around 1.47%. In the USA with a population of around 300 million and 1, 400,337 violent crimes in 2007 would put violent crimes in the USA at .47%, less than that of the UK. So now which society is more violent? The society armed with guns or the one armed with knives?
