News Channel 15 2008 in Review

Sunday, December 28th, 2008

It’s been a busy year, news wise, for Savannah, Georgia. From Presidential Elections to the Economy to Missing Persons and Death Penalty Cases. Here are some of the stories that impacted most the people of the Coastal Georgia Empire:

-The Economy…The economy has been on everyone’s minds recently. The recession is causing a lot of problems with rising unemployment. Great Dane Trailers in Savannah will be closing and JCB cut over 100 jobs. Also, Car dealerships aren’t faring too well either, prompting OC Welch to buy five radio spots, which proved to be quite controversial.

-The Election…The election this year was filled with excitement. With the the idea of change in mind, Senator Barack Obama and Joe Biden were elected as the next President and Vice President of the United States. The election also brought some prominent political characters to Georgia. The U.S. Senate seat in Georgia went into a run-off, and Chambliss came out on top, partly due to the star power of Sarah Palin.

-The Calverts…John and Elizabeth Calvert disappeared from Hilton Head Island on March 3, 2008, and no one has seen them sense. This case has been anything but ordinary, with the key suspect committing suicide and little details released since May 2008.

-The Troy Davis Case… Troy Anthony Davis has been sitting on Death Row for a number of years now. His case has gotten a lot of international exposure because seven of the nine witnesses in the initial trial have recanted (taken back) their statements. Many appeals and stays of execution later, Troy’s future is still uncertain. The US Supreme Court is still looking over the case.

-The Severe Weather… From the Tornado Outbreak on Mother’s Day (May 11) to the tornado that went right through midtown Savannah, Georgia, weather has been wild in 2008. Tropical Storm Fay also caused some trouble to our neighbors to the south, dumping record numbers of rain in South Georgia and Northern Florida.

-The Imperial Sugar Refinery Explosion… It is likely that the February 7th explosion at the refinery has touched everyone in our area in some way or another. The blast claimed the lives of 14 people and injured dozens more. Though the blast was something never hoped for, it did one good thing for us. It brought the communities in our area together. We helped one another. We gave to one another. We tried our very best to comfort one another in the time of need.

David Meerman Scott: One of the things that has been so interesting to me over the last couple of years is focusing on the marketing aspects of the US Presidential Election. As we’re recording this right now we are a couple of months out from the November election here in the United States and it’s been fascinating to watch the differences in the ways that the two candidates and the two campaigns have been, or have been not, using social media.

Barack Obama and his campaign seem to be really embracing the ideas of social media, where as John McCain less so. In fact John McCain prides himself on not being a user of a computer, which is kind of interesting to me. However Barack Obama is the complete opposite and a specific thing that Obama did that is so fascinating is that he realises that there’s communities out there of people who are interested in what he is doing and want to follow him using the tools of social media. So in one case he’s got Twitter feed and what he does is he alerts his supporters who subscribe to his Twitter feed about his whereabouts and what he’s doing.

And I found it fascinating that when he announced his candidate for vice president, what he did is he first alerted people on Twitter and other networks as well and his email list and said ‘I’m going to be announcing my candidate for vice president first, to you, my supporters through Twitter and through email and through our site before I even alert the media’. And it was interesting because I was on vacation at the time and I was on my computer and Bang! there’s an announcement from Barack Obama that he …
